ABOUT MCK & HISTORY OF MATA CHARAN KAUR

Birth and childhood (1930 C.E.):

Think of selfless service Mata Charan Kaur name automatically comes onto your lips. She was born to Mata Bant Kaur on Feb. 5, 1930 in a Sikh Dharam

Family in village Teng Nangal, Majitha Tehsil: Amritsar, Distt: Amritsar. Her father is Teja Singh.

At the time of her birth, the family had four milch buffaloes and a chariot. A water pitcher, a chaati (a big earthen container) of ghee (clarified butter)

and those of sugar and shakkar used to be put in a row beside a wall. (apparently, these things were considered the signs of prosperity of a village family)..

She, though not educated, was very wise and religious-minded. Both, her mother and father, used to go for listening to (Baba’s) spiritual discourse (talk)

which presented quite a family look. In the evening kirtan (singing of gurbani) took place. The Rehras (the evening prayer) and the Ardas (the sikh prayer) in the

village. Her considered planting of saplings and then watering them regularly a virtuous act. She used to help her mother in this good work. While walking, the

mother would ask her to pick up thorns, long thorns, stones, etc. from the way so that the same did not pierce into someone’s feet, etc. Her mother would also ask

to pick up brick-bats from the way so that those did not obstruct the cart-wheels thereby putting more stress onto the bullocks. Her mother would also tell Mata

Charan Kaur to see that no ants, insects or other tiny creatures were got crushed under her feet. Her mother would also send her onto the roof to spread grains

before various birds. All these things together helped Mata Charan Kaur to inculcate deep feelings of love, compassion, sympathy, etc. for all the mankind, animals,

birds, trees, etc; and, in other words, for all species of flora and fauna at large. This also helped Mata Charan Kaur to develop an urge for selfless service and help to

others in need and distress.

Before serving her breakfast, her mother would send her to pay obeisance in the Gurudwara Sahib. Her mother would also relate stories of various religious

personalities, gurus, etc, to Mata Charan Kaur. This helped her acquire religious leanings.

The mother would make Mata Charan Kaur to serve poor, with both hands, a handful of flour or grain. This made Mata Charan Kaur a willing giver

of alms and a philanthropist. Mata Charan kaur was very Spiritual Personality.

Mata Charan Kaur was married in 1950 C.E. with S. Dhyan Singh, who was an Engineer in Punjab State Electricity Board.  Her father died in 16th

August, 2003.

How Mata Charan Kaur ji as a sikh ?

Mata Charan Kaur ji was listened to her (Baba’s) spiritual discourse (talk) which presented quite a family look. In the evening kirtan (singing of gurbani)

took place. The Rehras (the evening prayer) and the Ardas (the sikh prayer) had a very touching and profound effect on Mata Charan Kaur ji’s mind.  And she

thus, assured herself that she had found a place good enough for the development of her body, mind and soul. She would now think of ways and means required

for the development of her physical, mental and spiritual faculties and find time to think and identify as to which were the things and works required to be done in

this world but were not being attempted. And, she would take initiative to attempt those. Thus, a day and a night spent in Gurdwara Sahib.

She started giving a serious thought to environment pollution, unemployment, child labour, education and the social evils, and as a result of these studies.

Mata Charan Kaur, the woman:

The qualities inherited by Mata Charan Kaur from her father such as compassion, righteousness, truthfulness, contentment, etc. Singing of gurbani and the

healthy atmosphere of the Gurdwara made Mata Charan Kaur ji a staunch and true Sikh. Knowledge acquired from the selfless social service and the care of

the destitute and uncared patients made her a complete woman.

Alongside the service to the weak and the suffering mankind, she would always share the happiness and sorrow of her fellow sewadars. She believed

in the existence of God in every living being, and without any consideration of caste, creed, colour or religion. It is a miracle of the God’s grace that she

served with her own hands various inmates suffering from very serious, incurable/terminal and infectious diseases but she contracted none.

She had the firm belief that whatever achievement she had got was due to the grace of Gurdwaras. She never considered an award, rank or decoration

greater than the God’s grace. To render selfless service to the suffering with own hands were her mission as well as passion. Some of her personality traits are

described as under:-

i)                        She was so much unattached to worldly things that in the big and beautiful building of the head office which she got built by his ownself, she did not

have even an almirah for personal use, let alone a room. After facing a lot of hardships, lacs of rupees started coming to Mata Charan Kaur Society

as donation, but she would spend all generously on the care and welfare of the children for their education and give them shelter for residence, stay away

the children from child labour, give them a beautiful environment etc. etc. and never keep any money with herself.

ii)                      Morally, she was so high and perfect that she gave motherly support and affection to numerous children, maltreated by the society (or victims of

domestic violence), among whom there used to be many beautiful and young girls and women. This was the result of deep impress of the teachings of Guru

Nanak Dev ji on Mata Charan Kaur Ji’s mind.

iii)                    Her spirit of philanthropy and voluntary service was so strong.

She was so much concerned about unemployment, that when it became known to her that the replacement of handloom by machine gives rise to

unemployment.

v)                      Her diet was so simple and frugal that she would partake only of whatever was prepared in the langar. During the hard times of scarcity in the initial

stages, she was quite satisfied with whatever little was available for her personal consumption.

vi)                    Mata Chara Kaur remained constantly worried, till the end of her life, about the health of earth, air and water, solution of national and social

problems and care and selfless service to the humanity. And, she did so much work in this direction that she became a living legend during her life time.

End of a phenomenon:

Mata Charan Kaur Ji had become a living legend during her life time. She was not simply a single person but an institution in herself, and a phenomenon

to watch over. She breathed her last on 16th April, 2005.

Great women like Mata Charan Kaur come into this world after ages, but, as per the laws of nature, they too are destined to leave this mortal world.

Although, Mata Charan Kaur Ji is physically no more amongst us, but she has left behind her ever-lasting memorial in the shape of Mata Charan Kaur Society,

which is home for the illiterate.
